सामान्यतः पूजा में अक्षत (चावल) का प्रयोग किया जाता है. परन्तु दीपावली के पूजन में माता लक्ष्मी व श्रीगणेश के पूजन में खील (खिली हुई धान) उपयोग में लायी जाती है. ऐसा इसलिए क्योंकि दीपावली पर माता लक्ष्मी का पूजन धन सम्पदा की कामना के लिए की जाती है.
